The Forgotten Champion of Silver Pines, 2018

Under the glaring floodlights at Silver Pines on June 16th, 2018, fifteen golfers teed off just before midnight for the club’s first-and only-overnight tournament. Every player wore a neon wristband, and the fairways glowed a surreal blue, but as the hours crawled by, everyone was chasing the huge silver cup perched beside the 18th green. Witnesses remember Gerard Nash missing a putt at 2:34 AM, and Linda Cho’s ball skipping the water on hole thirteen. The old maintenance man, Ray, claims he refilled dozens of coffee pots for exhausted scorekeepers as scores stayed neck and neck. By 4:55 AM, people swore they saw a shadowy figure raising the trophy in the mist, while the crowd’s cheers echoed off the trees. Yet when the sun rose at 5:12, the trophy table was empty-no champion, and the master scorecard was gone. Even now, ask anyone who played: they remember the cold dew, the closing putts, the echo of celebration-but nobody, not one, remembers the winner’s name.
