The Unexplained Faces at Bélmez: Spain, 1971

On August 23, 1971, a woman in Bélmez, Spain spotted a human face staring up at her from the newly-laid concrete of her kitchen floor. Days passed-and when María Gómez tried to scrub the face away, it only seemed to darken, etching itself deeper into the stone as visitors watched. Workers tore up the floor completely, poured fresh cement, but within a week, different faces appeared-male, female, some distorted in pain, never the same twice. Over the next thirty years, more than a hundred faces emerged in the Pereira home, with no explanation ever found for how or why they appeared-or why all attempts to permanently remove the Bélmez Faces only created more.
