Turritopsis: The Jellyfish That Rewinds Time

In 1988, a glass beaker in Genoa, Italy, held a turritopsis dohrnii jellyfish that was, impossibly, shrinking from adulthood back to its earliest form. Instead of dying after reproducing, this jellyfish does the one thing every other animal can’t: it actually reverts from a sexually mature medusa to its youthful polyp stage. This was not just a fluke-laboratory studies found the same turritopsis specimen could perform this reversal dozens of times, each triggered by stress, starvation, or mechanical injury. Under the microscope, every specialized cell-muscle, nerve, even the reproductive organs-dissolves and transforms back into its basic, undifferentiated state. The turritopsis doesn’t simply heal; it wipes itself clean, as if rewinding its own life tape, then grows up again from scratch. For other jellyfish, senescence is a one-way street, but for the turritopsis in Genoa, death is just another stage to undo. The only thing that ends its cycle is predation or disease; as long as it escapes both, the same turritopsis can loop this reset indefinitely, making it, so far as science has found, the closest thing to biologically immortal life.
