Script
Eighteen miles outside Brisbane in 2018, a single satin bowerbird was caught dragging a blue Bic pen cap nearly twice its size through thick grass. It joined a pile next to blue straws, a bottle cap, and a tarnished marble, every one neatly lined around a stick structure that took days to build and guard. From sunrise, this bowerbird fended off rival males trying to sabotage his work or steal his treasures, never leaving the sticks unattended for more than a minute. By midday, he’d raided picnic sites and even pried blue clothespins from a neighbor’s line-always blue, while reds and yellows were ignored. Over a hundred objects ended up circling his bower, but the reason for this obsession kept researchers up at night. In 2015, biologists at the University of Queensland measured female satin bowerbirds’ responses to three bower displays: pure sticks, red objects, and blue. Only the ones surrounded by stolen blue trinkets got the slow, approving dances in mating season. After years of chasing junk, the answer landed in a single frame from a camera trap-the shimmer of the male’s midnight-blue feathers looked brightest in that wall of blue, turning a nest of stolen trash into the ultimate mirror.
