Script

In 2006 at Amboseli National Park in Kenya, a herd of African elephants formed a tight circle around the body of an adult matriarch and didn’t move for nearly two days. Every few hours, a young calf pressed its trunk to her tusks, while the oldest female, named Echo, would step forward and rumble a sound so low it vibrated the air. Other elephants from distant families arrived through the night, each stopping to touch the bones and faded skin. Conservationists watching counted six different herds, all converging in total silence, refusing to feed or drink even though waterholes were close by. For fifty hours, the elephants stayed, exploring every inch of the body with their trunks, lifting old bones and rearranging them into careful piles. One male even tried to lift the fallen matriarch to her feet, pushing with a force that cracked a tree trunk beside her. Scientists noted elephants returned to the same spot months later, gently tracing the skull and tusks with the tips of their trunks. Only then did Echo and her herd finally leave-twenty-two hours after first finding the body, leaving behind a ring of disturbed earth and, on top, the matriarch’s carefully aligned tusks.
