The Smiling Lady of Pico House

On a humid night in 1875, the doorman at Pico House froze outside Room 302 when he saw a woman in a blue silk dress standing perfectly still, her mouth pulled into a grin that seemed too wide for her face. Her eyes never blinked, even as lamplight flickered across her sharp, white teeth. The night manager later found footprints-wet, as if from nowhere-trailing down the hall from that same door. Other guests started whispering about a lady who would appear at midnight, always smiling, gliding silently across the carpet, never speaking, never breaking eye contact. Some workers refused to climb to the third floor after midnight, claiming ice-cold air would sweep past them-even in the middle of summer. Local legend said she’d once been a guest who vanished without a sound, but no record matched her description. To this day, those who see the smiling lady of Pico House wake up with the taste of iron in their mouths and a memory of her teeth glowing in the dark.
