The Pangolin’s Armored Ball Defense

Three thousand keratin scales snap shut in just under a second as a Sunda pangolin in Malaysia turns itself into an impenetrable ball, more armored than any other mammal ever recorded. Each scale is sharp enough to slice, and stacked so tightly that even lion jaws can’t pry them apart. For up to five minutes, the pangolin holds its breath and waits, while leopards try biting and rolling it, finding nothing but unbreakable keratin. That’s how the Sunda pangolin survives predators that can crush bone: it becomes a living fortress, locked tight until danger passes.
