In 1518, a woman in Strasbourg danced in the street for days, and nobody knows exactly why. Her name was Frau Troffea, and soon dozens of other people were dancing too. Strasbourg's authorities even hired musicians and set up a stage, hoping the dancers would wear themselves out. They later reversed course and sent the dancers to a shrine. The cause remains a mystery, but one leading explanation is mass psychogenic illness.
The Dancing Plague of 1518 began when a woman danced in the streets of Strasbourg. More people joined her, and the authorities eventually ordered musicians and a stage before changing their approach.
