Sacramento's Haunted Delta King Riverboat: The Lady in Red

On a winter night in 1939, a woman in a crimson dress was seen gliding across the upper deck of Sacramento’s Delta King just minutes before a passenger plunged screaming into the river below. The Delta King, docked beside Old Sacramento, had survived fires, floods, and sudden deaths since its maiden voyage. Workers restoring the boat in 1989 found locked staterooms where cold drafts slipped under the doors, even when no one had entered for decades. Multiple reports flooded in: footsteps pacing the hardwood at 2:37 a.m., fading when the corridor lights flickered out. The most unnerving detail remained the sightings of the same scarlet figure, her face never visible, always near the Grand Saloon after dark. Doors would swing silently on their own and the old call bell rang out in the night hours when the saloon was empty. All stories circled back to that single night in 1939, when the Lady in Red’s real name was finally revealed in the passenger log: Evelyn Dalton, age 27, who vanished forever into the black water.
