Script

In the summer of 1946, a dromedary camel at Cairo Zoo sat down in the dust with exactly 80 pounds of fat sealed inside its single hump, while the Nile sun drove the temperature over 110 degrees. Out in the Sahara, the fat in that hump meant days without food or water, while horses collapsed in hours. That single mound gave one camel enough reserves to cross 100 unshaded miles, burning fat while others panted for water. Researchers in 1965 measured how a dromedary could lose a quarter of its own body weight-over 300 pounds-thanks to that portable stash, and keep going as its blood thickened and other mammals would fall. But the final test came when scientists injected dye into the bloodstream and watched it vanish as dehydration hit every organ except the hump. All that fat, untouched while the rest of the body starved, waiting for the last moment to be unleashed. When the camel ran out of every other option, that 80-pound hump turned itself to water-literally, through chemical breakdown-releasing up to 110 liters and carrying the survivor to the next oasis.
