Script

In 2014, the limestone pillars near Dorset’s Jurassic Coast began to crumble, leaving sharp white dust around the base but no rock pieces in the sea. That’s weathering at work, breaking down rocks where they stand-acid rain wore away the limestone until it turned to powder right there. Just a mile away, after a winter storm, those same pillars lost sections of rock that vanished downstream-that’s erosion, carrying the broken bits away with wind, water, or ice. Weathering changes the rock right where it sits, like cracked paint on an old windowsill. Erosion picks up those pieces and takes them somewhere new, like a river sweeping leaves. If the ground at Dorset looks jagged but the nearby riverbed is smooth and round, weathering made the sharp pieces, and erosion carried the round ones. Remember: weathering crumbles, erosion carries. Weathering leaves, erosion moves.

Weathering and erosion both change landscapes, but they're not the same thing. This video dives into how weathering breaks down rocks in place, while erosion moves them elsewhere, with real-world examples you can spot. Learn the key differences in just under a minute.
