The Yuba County Five Disappearance, 1978

Forty-one miles from their Yuba City homes, the five men’s Mercury Montego sat abandoned on a snow-choked mountain road in February 1978, engine intact, doors unlocked, keys gone. Before police even questioned why five men with intellectual disabilities had driven up such treacherous terrain after a basketball game in Chico, they found tracks leading into the forest-and then nothing. Even search dogs refused the scent as wind sliced through empty campgrounds. Four months later, the first body surfaced inside a ranger’s trailer, wrapped in shreds of sheets, eight cans of food untouched, and frostbitten toes all that remained. The other four were miles away, scattered beneath brush and snow, some wearing no shoes at all. The only item left in perfect condition was a gold watch, always running, that didn’t belong to any of the Yuba County Five.
