The Unseen Guest at the Wedding Banquet: 1979, Breckridge Hall

When the caterer at Breckridge Hall counted the plates on July 21st, 1979, she found forty-nine precisely set - but only forty-eight guests signed the seating chart. The staff noticed a sharp cold draft around table seven, though no windows were open and it was the height of a humid summer night. Champagne bottles at that table chilled over with condensation unlike anywhere else in the ballroom, and the lone seat’s chair would not stay pushed in. The bride’s aunt swore she saw a shadow flicker every time the band struck up the couple’s song, just beside that empty place. One waiter left mid-shift after feeling the sensation of someone gripping his arm as he tried to clear the untouched bowl of soup. Photographs from the end of the night reveal everyone smiling, except at table seven, where one glass remains half full and every face seems turned subtly away. But when the caterer balanced her count before sunrise, every plate had been used and the untouched soup was gone - as if, at Breckridge Hall, the guest list had never been complete without the unseen fifty-ninth.
