The Singing Ghost of the Majestic: 1991, Austin

At exactly 2:19 AM on June 13th, 1991, a patrol officer paused outside the boarded-up Majestic Theater in downtown Austin, drawn by the sound of a flawless soprano drifting out through a padlocked door. Each night that week, the same aria echoed down Congress Avenue, growing impossibly louder even after the theater’s power was completely cut. Locals gathered on the sidewalk-no lights ever flickered inside, and yet the voice never stalled or cracked. The building had been condemned for ten years, entrance sealed by four chain locks and reinforced boards. Still, someone left fresh carnations shoved through the letter slot every night, and one morning, a vintage gold earring lay on the threshold where no one could have reached. Security footage showed only an empty, dust-choked lobby at the moment that final crescendo rattled the glass. The city finally unchained the doors to investigate, and the only thing inside was a torn 1954 playbill for La Traviata, marked with a single name: Evelyn LaRue.
