The Door That Moves Rooms: Carter House, 1992

On June 14th, 1992, the blue door near the back parlor of Carter House was nailed shut before the family went to bed, but by morning it was standing upright in the hallway upstairs. The next night, they locked it with heavy chains, yet the Carter House blue door vanished completely, only to show up inside the pantry where not even a grown man could squeeze it through the frame. Paint chips and faint smudges trailed after it, but there were no fingerprints or pry marks around the Carter House. They tried blocking it with a dresser, filling the frame with books, still, every sunrise brought the door somewhere new-inside a walk-in closet with coats draped over it, or flat against the damp cellar wall. The carpenter who once replaced the hinges swore the wood grain on the Carter House door seemed to grow longer, twisting in the night. Weeks passed, and the family left chalk marks and taped notes, but the only thing consistent was the unmistakable blue paint, shifting from room to room. The last time they saw it, the Carter House blue door was upright in the yard, its chain still locked and the old nail holes in place-never explained, never moved again.
