The 3AM Knock at the Harlow Farmhouse, 1978

At exactly 3AM on January 16, 1978, the oldest Harlow girl woke to three sharp knocks at the farmhouse window-despite being on the second floor, twenty feet above the frozen ground. The glass rattled like someone was pounding with a bare fist, and when her father sprinted outside with a flashlight, there weren’t any tracks in the snow beneath the window. The next night, the knocking came again, this time at her brother’s room on the opposite side of the house. By the end of that week, every window-twelve in all-had been struck, always at 3AM sharp, always with that impossible, heavy thud that no bird or branch could make. The Harlows started keeping a written log by the kitchen clock, marking the time and which window it was each night, hoping to predict where it would happen next. They even tried waiting outside with rifles and lanterns, but the sound only came when no one was looking. After two months, the knocks suddenly stopped just as mysteriously as they’d begun-on March 16th, the anniversary of the previous owner's disappearance from the same room where the first pounding started.
