Script

In September 2012 at Whitaker & Son in Bridgeport, I picked up a funeral program from the stack and froze-the photo was my own, but I wasn’t the one in the casket. Every mourner clutched the same pamphlet with my face on the cover, even though the service was for a woman named Dorothy Lane. When I showed the pamphlet to the funeral director, he stammered that the printing order had come from a blocked number, with my name and date of birth on the invoice. I turned to leave, but the usher locked the doors and handed me a folded note. Inside, it read, "Look in the mirror on the altar at noon."

Caption

In 2012, mourners attending a wake at Whitaker & Son Funeral Home in Bridgeport received programs featuring the wrong photo. The face on the pamphlets belonged to someone who was very much alive, but no one at the funeral seemed surprised-except the person in the photo, who arrived after receiving an anonymous invitation. What happened next left the funeral director shaken for years.
