Script

On June 12th, 2015, a tourist on the Pont Neuf tried to capture Notre Dame’s gargoyles from across the Seine, and ended up with two very different photos. That camera had both optical and digital zoom, but the trick was knowing which button to press. Optical zoom uses the camera’s physical lens-imagine twisting a telescope to make distant things appear bigger and clearer. Digital zoom just crops and enlarges what the lens already sees, like blowing up a printed photo until it looks pixelated. Optical maintains image quality because it’s all done with glass and mechanics. Digital is just playing with the pixels you already have. That Paris tourist’s shot with digital zoom looked blurry, but optical zoom kept the stone faces sharp. Think of optical as zooming before you take the shot, digital as cropping after. Notre Dame’s gargoyles never looked clearer on that memory card.
