Devil’s Tramping Ground: North Carolina’s Barren Circle

On a patch of earth near Bear Creek, North Carolina, there’s a 40-foot wide circle where, for as long as anyone remembers, nothing green has ever survived. Locals call this place the Devil’s Tramping Ground, and stories say dogs refuse to cross the ring and birds never land inside it. Every night, the stunted grass and dead leaves at the circle’s edge are found swept outward, as if something heavy paced in perfect silence. In 1946, a farmer named Donnie Harper left a stake in the center overnight-by dawn, the ground was spotless, stake and all, no marks leading away. In the 1980s, campers tried staying through the night, only to find their tents dragged outside the circle by morning, ropes frayed and gear untouched. No plant, no moss, no root will take hold, though the soil matches the woods around it. The legend claims the Devil himself wears a path here, tracing endless circles as he plots mischief, and that’s why nothing dares to grow where his steps fall.
