Chlorophyll Drops: The 1941 Locker Room Experiment

In September 1941, inside Coach Lew Wallace’s South Side High gym, the air reeked of sweat-until he slipped green chlorophyll drops into the team’s water cooler. By the fourth day, not only had the stench vanished, but the entire team reported fewer mouth ulcers and brighter eyes, though no one could explain why. It wasn’t just odor that changed-the school nurse, Mrs. Sharon, started giving the same drops to the wrestling squad and charted less foot fungus after two weeks, though she never linked it to the chlorophyll. Even the custodian, Jim, noticed something unusual that month-the showers stopped clogging from soap scum, thanks to fewer oils on the drains. The team all wanted to know if there was a catch, and it took three more games before they realized the flavor vanished after mixing with lemon juice, which made it actually taste fresh. Wallace kept the secret off the signs by writing “Cool Mint Elixir” on the dispenser. A single glass-15 drops with lemon water-answered the stench, the ulcers, and the drains, all at once, and even today, Wallace’s green elixir recipe floats around South Side gyms.
