In 2002 at MIT’s Media Lab, researchers found that a single pile of unsorted papers buried an average of 57 working minutes every week. The chaos wasn’t just paper-open tabs mixed with half-finished notes meant the waste doubled when digital files came into play. The Friday 3-Stack was their answer: one stack for papers to keep, one to toss, and one for files needing digital backup. Every Friday, every item gets assigned-keep, delete, upload-and the desk and desktop are reset for Monday. That’s how MIT’s system returned nearly an hour of focused work per week: three stacks, one action session, every Friday afternoon.
