The Spoon-in-Bottle Trick for Stubborn Jar Lids

There’s a 2015 post from The Kitchn where a single stainless steel teaspoon breaks open a stubborn Bonne Maman jam lid in three seconds. Bonne Maman jars are notorious-eight grooves, extra-tight vacuum lock, and a rim too smooth to grip properly with wet hands. But The Kitchn staff didn’t use hot water, knives, or rubber mats. Instead, that teaspoon slid right under the rim of the lid, angled just so against one of the grooves. With a twist-not even hard-the vacuum seal hissed, and the jar lid spun off with almost zero force. The reason: air sneaks under, equalizes the pressure, and cancels out the vacuum that was locking the Bonne Maman shut. Ever since that 2015 spoon trick, it’s worked on every jam jar in their New York kitchen, even those sealed since 2009.
