At 11:08 a.m. in the Larchmont Chapel, the heartbeat monitor beside Evelyn Marks’s open casket wouldn’t stop beeping - slow and steady, like she was still lying there, alive. Her daughter tried turning it off, but the screen flashed Evelyn’s name, age, and blood type, then reset itself, again and again, each time a little louder. When the mortician pulled the plug, the beeping echoed through the speakers, and Evelyn’s chest visibly rose as if drawing breath.
