The Case of Oliver's Upside-Down Lemon Tree, 2023

In spring 2023, every lemon on Oliver’s backyard tree grew perfectly upside down, their tiny stems pointing toward the grass and their bright yellow bodies dangling low. Even Grandma Lila, who’d picked lemons for fifty years, said she’d never seen the fruit hang that way. When Oliver’s best friend Mia tried to swing from a branch, she slipped and landed under a cluster so lopsided they looked like lanterns. That night, they spied a little nest of bumblebees tucked just above the lemons-each one busily buzzing and tickling the twigs right before the fruit started to grow. By the end of the season, Oliver’s tree had produced twenty-seven upside-down lemons, all thanks to their new bumblebee neighbors.
